Who it's for

Online course notes that make lessons stick

Watching a lesson is easy; remembering it a week later is not. Turn each video lesson into online course notes, with flashcards and a quiz, in one notebook per course.

Self-paced courses have a familiar problem. Without lectures, seminars or deadlines, the videos slide by, and the only record you keep is a progress bar. Online course notes give you something to come back to, and practice material turns watching into learning.

PrimeNote makes notes from video lessons on YouTube when they have captions, and from public web pages. Paste the link, choose the course notebook, and the lesson becomes a structured note with its own flashcards, quiz, mind map and audio versions. Live streams, Shorts and videos without captions aren't supported.

Many MOOC platforms keep their videos behind a login, which PrimeNote can't read from a link. Many also offer downloadable transcripts or slides. Paste the transcript text into a new note, or import the slides as a PDF, and you get the same structured note and study tools. For MOOC study notes, a notebook per course with one note per lesson works well.

Online learning rewards the same habits as campus study. Test yourself on each lesson a day or two later. Use the infographic as a one-page recap before the next module. Listen to a podcast episode of a hard lesson while you're away from the screen. And read the notebook summary before the final assessment.

Pace is the other challenge of online learning. Without a timetable, it helps to set a rule such as no new lesson until you've taken the quiz on the last one. It's a small check that stops a course from becoming a long list of videos you've watched but don't remember.

How it works

  1. Create a notebook for the course

One per course, so the notebook summary covers it all.

  2. Add each lesson

Paste a captioned YouTube link, a public page, a transcript or the slides.

  3. Watch, then read the note

Or skim the note first if you want to know what to focus on.

  4. Quiz yourself before the next lesson

Find out what stuck before moving on.

  5. Review on the go

Use the infographic for a recap and the podcast for listening.

Worked example

Notes from an online astronomy course

YouTube lesson with captions · Introductory astronomy · Lives of stars · 34 min (fictional example)

Summary
A star's mass decides its life: low-mass stars end as white dwarfs; massive stars end in supernovae, leaving neutron stars or black holes.
Sequence
Nebula, protostar, main sequence, red giant or supergiant, then the end state determined by mass.
Key terms
Main sequence, nuclear fusion, white dwarf, supernova, neutron star.
Flashcard
Q: What keeps a main-sequence star stable? A: Outward pressure from fusion balances inward gravity.

Good to know

  • YouTube videos need captions; live streams and Shorts aren't supported.
  • Pages behind a login can't be read from a link. Use the platform's transcript or slides instead.
  • Only YouTube and public web pages work as links; other video sites are not supported.
