What you can add
Handwritten notes to text, then to study notes
Photograph your handwritten notes, the textbook page you need to learn or the whiteboard before it's wiped. PrimeNote converts the handwriting to text and writes a typed, organized note.
Handwriting is good for learning; writing by hand makes you choose what to keep. The trouble comes later. Paper notes are hard to sort through, easy to lose, and slow to turn into revision material. Converting handwriting to text by retyping it is a chore most students never get round to.
Use the camera in PrimeNote or pick photos and screenshots from your library. PrimeNote recognises printed text and reasonably clear handwriting, then writes a structured note from it, with headings, key points and terms. Several images can go into one note, so the four pages you wrote in a tutorial, or a whiteboard that took three shots, become one note.
A textbook page works just as well. Photograph the pages of a section you need to learn and PrimeNote turns the textbook page into notes, ready to test yourself on. Photos of a handout, a past paper or slides on a projector are all fair game. If an image is very large, the app will ask you to use a smaller one.
The result is a typed note in the course notebook, with flashcards, a practice quiz, AI chat, a mind map and the other study tools built from it. Your handwritten notes keep the benefits of writing them, and gain the benefits of being able to test yourself on them.
Photos are also the quickest route for material that never existed digitally: a printed handout from a tutorial, a page of worked examples from a revision guide, or a lab manual you can't take out of the room. If a page is mostly diagrams with little text, label the parts by hand before photographing it so the note has words to work with.
How it works
Light the page evenly
Daylight or a desk lamp from the side works well. Avoid your own shadow across the page.
Shoot straight on
Hold the phone flat above the page so lines aren't skewed. Fill the frame with the page, not the desk.
Add all pages of one topic
Put several images into the same note when they belong together.
Let PrimeNote read and write
It recognises the text, including handwriting, and writes an organized note.
Check names and numbers
Compare formulas, dates and spellings against your page and correct anything in the note.
Handwritten chemistry notes on acid-base titration
3 photos · handwritten notebook pages · Chemistry 150 lab prep (fictional example)
- Summary
- A titration finds the concentration of an acid by adding a base of known concentration until the indicator changes colour.
- Procedure
- Rinse the burette with titrant, record the initial reading, add dropwise near the end point, record the final reading.
- Formula
- Moles of base at equivalence equal moles of acid for a 1:1 reaction, so c₁V₁ = c₂V₂.
- Flashcard
- Q: Why is phenolphthalein suitable for a strong acid and strong base? A: Its colour change falls within the steep part of the pH curve.
What you get
Typed text from the images
The recognised text from your photos, kept as the source of the note.
Organized note
Headings, key points and terms, written from what was on the pages.
Several pages, one note
All the images for a topic combined into a single note.
Flashcards and quiz
Practice material from your own handwriting, ready to use.
In the course notebook
Paper notes now sit next to your recordings and PDFs, in the same place.
When it helps
By hand vs. with PrimeNote
| What you're doing | By hand | With PrimeNote |
|---|---|---|
| Digitising handwritten notes | Retype them line by line | Photograph and get a typed note |
| Finding a topic later | Flick through paper notebooks | Open the course notebook |
| Revision from paper notes | Rewrite them as flashcards | Cards and a quiz from your handwriting |
| Whiteboard content | Copy fast before it's wiped | Take a photo and move on |
Good to know
- Handwriting recognition works on reasonably clear handwriting. Very cramped, faint or stylised writing may be misread.
- Diagrams and drawings aren't turned into text; the note captures the words around them.
- Very large images may need to be resized; the app tells you when that's needed.
- Always check formulas, numbers and names, since a single misread character can change the meaning.

Can I add several photos to one note?
Yes. Add the pages of one topic together.
Can I turn a textbook page into notes?
Yes. Photograph the page, or several pages of a section, and PrimeNote writes a study note with flashcards and a quiz.
Does it work with screenshots?
Yes. Screenshots of slides, articles or messages can be added from your photo library.
What if my photo is too large?
The app tells you if an image is too large, so you can use a smaller version.
Are diagrams converted?
